This song was inspired by a book by an author Annette represented about 20 years ago. It was one woman’s struggle to escape domestic violence and how the state agencies colluded with her controlling husband to keep her shackled. Nothing has changed. Or perhaps the song’s narrator is talking about her own bad self? Her own black dogs of depression, addiction.
