Lullaby for Annette's grandson Edward who imagined himself to be a ‘booful' mermaid aged 3. Geoff gave Annette one take in the vocal booth. His only stipulation was that the song contain the couplet 'you wake up to find your self toed up in ribbons and bows'.
The first verse is inspired by a William Robinson painting of his wife, Shirley, floating in a creek in which is reflected a forest landscape and full moon in the sky. It was written after the same holiday at Cooroy when Geoffrey wrote Bucolica. We went to the beach and camped in the dunes and an October moon rose over the pacific ocean, a blood red moon, pulled up by Venus above, and just we two. It was early in our relationship and I was completely smitten by Geoffrey, who had read me A net of Fireflies, a haiku by Basho. No one ever writes songs with Annette in them, so I figured I would write my own. It is sheer bliss to sing the song, with so much emotional connection to Geoffrey and now little Ted - they are both Capricorns and adore each other, though Geoff is not this actual grandfather, he looms large in Ted’s imagination - Geoff-er-ray, he calls him. Faux-pa.
