about
Though written before the death of Geoffrey's father, it is deeply resonant of the night he suffered his first stroke. Geoffrey rode in the ambulance with him to the hospital - 'by the engine, resplendent and co-eternal", then it spins out onto images of eternity and durability and return with the second part of the song.
Songs are ever-there, their rhythms scaffold our capacity to make poetic associations and form memory. They substrate all our imaginings - the songs a mother sings a son are the songs a father sings a daughter, and so the cycle goes.
lyrics
Ours oft' was the afternoon
Shiloh emphatica
Last night by the engine
we were resplendent, co-eternal
This is a song that you can sing
because you can’t be with everything
This is a sing that you can song
because you can’t be with everyone
It’s full of time
The songs, they are floating in the air
The songs, they are floating in the air
if you pluck them lightly when they are ripe, see
the songs are floating in the air
I walked out into your world’s
golden morning
I want to thank you for the longest wait
stood still stood still
the song that a mother sings a son
/the song that a daughter sings her father
the song that a mother sings a son
/the song that a daughter sings her father
complex and dumb in exasperated ardour
the song that a daughter sings a son
the bride and bridegroom have a tune
/the diamond and the circle love affair
sealed forever in their room
/infinity, the sound forever there
wedding up their minds in moments of time
the bride and bridegroom have a tune
the songs they are floating in the air
the songs they are floating in the air
springing to life when the time is right
the songs are floating in the air
